Johnny Peña

Jul 21, 1983 — Oct 28, 2026

With profound sadness, heavy hearts, and deep gratitude for a life devoted to love, courage, and selfless service, we announce the passing of our beloved Lieutenant Johnny Peña, who departed this life on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in Weslaco, Texas, at the age of 43. Although his earthly journey has come to an end, the extraordinary legacy of love, compassion, and dedication he leaves behind will forever live in the hearts of his family, friends, fellow firefighters, colleagues, and the countless lives he touched throughout his years of service.

Johnny was born on July 21, 1983, in Weslaco, Texas, to Juan Peña, Sr. and Hilda Gonzales. From an early age, Johnny possessed a kind and caring heart, a beautiful smile that could brighten even the darkest of days, and a natural desire to help those around him. He grew into a remarkable man whose life was defined not by the recognition he received, but by the difference he made in the lives of others.

For 19 dedicated years, Johnny proudly served with the City of Weslaco Fire Department, answering the call to protect and serve the very community he called home. Being a firefighter was more than a profession to Johnny; it was his passion, his purpose, and a calling he embraced wholeheartedly. He wore his uniform with pride, carried his responsibilities with honor, and never hesitated to place the needs of others before his own. Whether responding to an emergency, comforting someone during a difficult moment, or simply lending a helping hand, Johnny represented the true meaning of courage, compassion, and service.

Throughout his years with the fire department, Johnny developed friendships and bonds that extended far beyond the fire station. His fellow firefighters were not simply coworkers; they were his second family, his brothers and sisters in service. Together, they shared countless memories, long shifts, laughter, challenges, and moments that would forever unite them. Johnny cherished his fire department family deeply, and the love, respect, and brotherhood they shared meant the world to him. His absence will be felt in every corner of the department, but his memory will forever remain a part of its heart.

Johnny's dedication to helping others did not end when his shift at the fire station was over. He also served as a Registered Nurse at Valley Baptist Micro Hospital in Weslaco, continuing his mission of caring for others with the same compassion, patience, and kindness that defined his character. Whether wearing his firefighter's uniform or his nursing scrubs, Johnny's purpose remained the same: to bring comfort, hope, and healing to those who needed it most. His life was a beautiful example of what it truly means to have a servant's heart.

Yet, beyond his many accomplishments and years of public service, Johnny's greatest and most treasured role was that of a loving father. His daughters, Karen Castillo, Jillian Fay Peña and Liana May Peña, held a special place in his heart. They were among his greatest blessings, his pride, and his joy. The love he carried for his daughters was immeasurable, and the memories they shared will forever be treasures that no passage of time can take away. Though they must now walk through life without his physical presence, they will always carry their father's love, strength, and beautiful spirit within them.

Johnny was also a devoted son, a loving brother, a proud uncle, and a loyal friend. Those fortunate enough to know him will remember his unforgettable smile, his generous heart, his warm personality, and his ability to make others feel welcomed, valued, and loved. He was the kind of person who could turn an ordinary moment into a cherished memory and whose presence brought comfort and happiness to those around him. No matter how demanding life became, Johnny always found room in his heart to care for someone else.

Johnny was a hero not only because of the uniform he wore, but because of the heart he carried beneath it. His heroism was found in the lives he protected, the patients he comforted, the friendships he treasured, and the unconditional love he gave his family. He lived a life of purpose, placing service above self and leaving behind an example of compassion and dedication that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Johnny is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ruben Peña; and his maternal grandparents, Reymundo and Dora Gonzales.

Left to cherish his beautiful memory are his beloved daughters, Karen Castillo, Jillian Fay Peña and Liana May Peña; his loving father, Juan Peña, Sr.; his loving mother, Hilda Leal; his brother, John David Peña (Dee); his paternal grandmother, Maria Del Rosario Peña; and the mother of his children, Erica Castillo. He is also survived by his cherished nieces and nephews, Julissa Peña, Justine Peña, Julia Peña, Julian Peña, and Jaire Peña, along with numerous family members, dear friends, fellow firefighters, and colleagues whose lives were forever enriched by knowing him.

As we mourn the heartbreaking loss of Lieutenant Johnny Peña, we also celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the countless ways he made this world a better place. His passing leaves an emptiness that words cannot describe, but his legacy will continue through the lives he saved, the people he cared for, the friendships he built, and the family he loved so dearly.

To his fellow firefighters, Johnny will forever be a brother. To his patients, he was a compassionate caregiver. To his friends, he was someone they could always count on. To his family, he was a source of unconditional love. And to his daughters, he will forever be their daddy, their protector, and their hero.

Rest peacefully, Lieutenant Johnny Peña. Your final alarm has sounded, your duty here on earth is complete, and your watch has come to an end. We thank you for your 19 years of faithful service, your unwavering courage, and the love you so freely gave. Though you have answered your final call, your legacy will never be forgotten.

We have it from here, Lieutenant. Rest easy, brother.
