Joel Abiel Yanes, Sr.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joel Abiel Yanes Sr., a cherished husband, father, and friend, who left this world peacefully on August 7, 2025. Born on April 24, 1952, Joel lived a life dedicated to service and compassion, marked by his notable career and his honorable service in the Army Air Force.

Joel's legacy is one of love and dedication. He created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering support. He leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories that will forever echo in the hearts of his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jose & Margarita Yanes and brother, Jose "Pepe" Yanes.

Mr. Yanes is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ofelia Mireles Yanes; one son, Joel Abiel Yanes, Jr. (Rachel); two daughters, Jessica Marie Rocha (Felix) & Margaret Jo Yanes. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Amanda Rocha (Jomar Closner), Samanta Rocha, Abigail Rocha, Nicholas Yanes, Naya Yanes; one great-granddaughter, Skylar Marie Yanes & one great-grandson one the way.

A public viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 2:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Salinas Funeral Home of Weslaco - Chapel of the Heavens, where family and friends may come to pay their respects and celebrate the life of this remarkable man.

In celebration of Joel's life, a Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes, TX on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 9:00 AM, where all who knew and loved him are invited to gather in prayer and remembrance. Following the Mass, Joel will be interred with full military honors at the Rio Grande Valley Veterans State Cemetery at 11:00 AM, where his commitment to his country will be honored alongside his remarkable journey through life.

As we gather to reflect on Joel Abiel Yanes Sr.'s life, let us remember a man who embodied kindness, resilience, and love. He will be greatly missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace.
