Mass of Christian Burial at St Joan of Arc Catholic Churchon Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 10 am with internment to follow at Highland Cemetery in Weslaco, TX.

He was a strict yet generous father to Digna Cavazos Weems (James); Diana Cavazos Rivera (John); David Cavazos (Elilah); Dahlia Castillo (Richard); Maria del Carmen II (John Ulloa, deceased); and Margie Cavazos (Biltrand Andrews). Grandchildren include Daniella Marquez (César), Amanda Cavazos Weems (Gabriel Rodriguez), Elle Cavazos, Michael Weems, Nathan Castillo, Ashley Nohavitza (Scott), Nicholas Castillo, Javier Cavazos Weems, Biltrand Andrews, Jr. and Breanna Andrews, and Great-Grandchildren César Jesus Marquez and Ford Jarrell Nohavitza.

Affectionately called Chuy, Daddy, Grandpa, Don Chuy, and mi Viejo, Mr. Cavazos was born in Elsa, TX on January 4, 1935 to Fortunato and Ventura Herrera Cavazos. He was educated in the Edcouch-Elsa public schools where he played football, was named "Most Bashful" and graduated high school in May 1953. Cavazos served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959, and earned an Honorable Discharge.

He claimed he went to work on the family farm at age 6, and he did, as a passenger on the tractor directing his adult brothers. In the Army, he worked as a typewriter-telegraph repairman, and other employment included grocery produce clerk, mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, revenue agent for the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 1990. He operated Cavazos Tax Service until 2013 when he was 78.

His eyes twinkled as he recalled the day he met "the most beautiful girl in the world" Maria del Carmen Cano at a wedding where she was a bridesmaid and he was a groomsman. Chuy and Carmela were married on May 7, 1961 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Weslaco, TX.

While working full-time and raising a family, he attended Pan American University, Edinburg, TX and at age 37, Mr. Cavazos graduated with a Bachelor's of Business Administration Degree on May 21, 1972.

Completing his education was a life-changing accomplishment and was the catalyst to move the family from the Rio Grande Valley near the southern border of Texas to Lubbock in January 1973. He was a member of Christ the King Cathedral, volunteered for Boys Scouts of America, Knights of Columbus and LULAC.

Mr. Cavazos believed in working hard, loving his wife and family, and helping others generously.

Maria and her family would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to the Hospice of Lubbock nurse Glenda Mooney, social worker Veronica Buescher and Serendipity manager Courtney Justice for all the care they rendered to Jesus during his time under hospice care.
