Alma S. Cortez, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, in Weslaco, TX. Born on June 26, 1957, in Mission, TX, Alma touched the lives of all who knew her with her kind and welcoming nature. She had a remarkable ability to make others feel at ease, accompanied by a wonderful sense of humor that brought joy and warmth into every room she entered.
Alma’s love extended beyond her family and friends; she had a special affection for elephants, a symbol of strength, wisdom, and loyalty that mirrored the essence of her own character. Those who knew her will remember not only her gentle spirit but also the laughter and light she shared so generously.
She was preceded in death by her dear parents, Pedro Sosa and Petra Rodriguez Sosa, whose memories she carried with great love. Alma’s life was a testament to devotion and caring, lived fully through her cherished family.
She is lovingly survived by her devoted husband, Rene R. Cortez, who stood by her side through every chapter of their journey together. Alma was the proud mother of three children: David Cortez and his wife Susan, Velsa Casas, and Jessica Lynn Cortez. Her siblings, Jesus Sosa, Juan Sosa, and Guadalupe Sosa, remain close to her memory and their family bonds.
Alma’s legacy continues in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were a radiant source of joy in her life: Alexander Casas and his wife Kate Alanis, Alexandria Casas and her husband Hugo Cabrera, Jr., Briseis D. Cortez, and Madelyn Gaona; as well as her great-grandchildren Ezra James Rincones, Alaina Casas, Isabela Cabrera, Larissa Cabrera, and Dariel Lopez. Her family’s love and the deep connections she nurtured are a lasting tribute to her beautiful spirit.
The community will gather at the Salinas Funeral Home - Chapel of the Heavens, located at 304 E Edinburg Ave, Elsa, TX 78543, to honor Alma’s memory. A viewing will be held on Monday, April 20, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM, with a Rosary scheduled at 7:00 PM. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, April 21 at 10:00 AM, followed by interment at Val Verde Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 11:00 AM.
Alma S. Cortez leaves behind a world made better by her presence—her kindness, her laughter, and her steadfast love remain forever engraved in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her. Her journey on earth has ended, but the warmth of her spirit will endure, embraced by those she loved most.
